About Our Curriculum

When choosing a style of martial arts, one should try to find a school that has a curriculum and knowledge that suits ones physical attributes, interests, and sense of utility but also a school & instructor that is conducive to ones own learning preferences. In the world of martial arts training there are many different styles or types of arts to choose from. The term "style” in reference to the martial arts, means a particular school of practice with its own individual training methods, techniques and emphasis on application of movement. In the Chinese arts, a style can mean an entire system containing many forms or patterns of movement, or often times the term “style” refers to just one form (kata in other arts) that is practiced, drilled upon and learned to be understood and applied over many years of dedication.
A student must keep in mind that on average no matter what martial arts style one is learning, the first year of basics training is almost universal. In all systems regardless of origin, learning the fundamental movements of the art such as the different blocks, strikes, kicks, footwork and stances are a necessity. At the intermediate and advanced levels of training, it is the understanding, application, emphases and purpose of the fundamentals that becomes extremely important and differs from style to style and school to school. The Instructors of the Scranton Martial Arts Center (SMAC) TM are some of the area's only martial arts instructors who truly understand the various stages of martial arts training and student development.
The Scranton Martial Arts Center (SMAC) TM offers a well balanced and rounded martial arts curriculum. Each program has a structured path of learning with set requirements for each stage of training, covering the various aspects of the Chinese martial arts. The goal of the instructors at the Scranton Martial Arts Center (SMAC) TM is to do more than just teach the students martial arts techniques, but rather educate the students in the endless diversity of the techniques and movements of the Chinese based arts and styles. The instructors of the Center utilize refined teaching skills, along with their vast real world martial arts experience, to instill a sense of martial arts utility into the students so they have the ability to adequately apply their learned knowledge to either martial arts competitions or dangerous real life situations, should one arise.
