The education of children in the martial arts can often be a complicated subject. In the opinion of the instructors and managment of the Center, children should not begin martial arts training until around the age of six. At this age a child can begin to understand the techniques being instructed to them and can be made aware of the dangers and consequences of utilizing the techniques. A child should remain in a program designed toward the needs and education of children through the age of thirteen and be phased into an adult oriented program carefully. A Jr. Martial Arts Program, should begin with a non-complicated style of martial art such as the style that was offered at the Center, or an easily understood form of karate. The method of martial arts that spear headed the Children's Program at the Scranton Martial Arts Center is know as the White Dragon Fist System (Bai Lung Chuan Fa) A great beginner system for children, such as the Bai Lung System, will cover the fundamental techniques necessary for the development of basic skills that the student can carry on into a more intricate Adult Training program when they reach the age of fourteen. Like the program that was offered at the Center, a schools children's program should have requirements for each stage of training that the student must complete to reach their next level. These requirements serve as tangible goals for the students to mark their progress in their training. Classes should be set in a fun, upbeat, yet disciplined environment that helps keep the children interested in the class while aiding in the benefits of good health, self-respect, leadership and self discipline that the martial arts are known for.
